Ride report: Wild-to-Mild 2016-06-16

My invitation to join the Mild-to-Wild ride on Youth Day in order to celebrate your youth, no matter what your age, was not met with an enthusiastic response. As I was contemplating to cancel the ride, a few late WhatsApp messages arrived; one from Francois announcing that he had convinced two "victims" to join. That made the numbers look better and the ride was on.

At the stroke of seven pm at the Moo Mall, seven riders were ready. Francois’ victims turned out to be two newby ladies, Ingrid and Marli. Adnaan, Tertius and Herman made up the rest of the pack who set out with me leading and Herman sweeping.

We set out directly to the Mielemuur. Leaving Mieliemuur to go underneath the bridge on the R21, I fell victim to the rubbish with some broken bricks by not negotiating my way through it without a quick putting down of my bike. This innocent movement was immediately regarded as an "ungraceful dismount" by the riders following me. Since I make the rules, I guess I have to stick to the rules, unlike some prominent people in our dear country. That is the reason you have to struggle through this ride report.

We did the first speedzone to the second road on the left, followed by the speedzone to the T junction. After the climb to the power lines, the path through the trees, cautiously walking past the hole that resembles an unused grave, we went down the exhilarating bumpy downhill. At the bottom of that there is a very slippery section in summer-time when it is wet. But this was winter time, so no problem. Guess who forgot about the winter rain we had just two days earlier! This time it was an unmistakable ungraceful dismount leaving me flat on my side in the mud. Oh well, the ride report had been on the cards already…

The rest of the ride, including a longish ghost ride in the half-moon, went without a hitch. The two lady "victims" turned out to be all but. Back at the Moo Mall just after 9 pm, having done 31.1 km. the ride was well described by Adnaan:

Perfect coldness.
Perfect luck (no mechanicals).
Perfect meandering ride. 31km and back at 21h05.
Great stuff guys.

Intro ride report by Francois 2016-06-02

So we all know the rules.

Ungraceful dismount means writing a ride report.

After putting my bike together I set off to go greet the other riders before the ride gets on the way, that’s when it happened…

I get off, but my bike keeps following me to the pavement!!!

My leg warmer got stuck on my seat and I ended up doing a very ungraceful fairy-spin manoeuvre to prevent a broken rear derailleur.

Hence the report.

So it’s June and the ride starts well after dark now.

Five of us disappointed the cold weather wizard and enjoyed a relaxing Intro ride.

Upon arriving Michelle frantically ran over to the other side of her can and checked that she remembered her battery.

YES.. the battery is here. Let’s go.

That is when she realised that her light is not her bike, but ride we will!

Oupa Gerrit came to the rescue with a small headlamp but since it is the intro ride it worked well.

The ride was problem free until we stopped to refuel.

While just standing still a random puncture appears and it just wont seal.

Oupa Gerrit got a plug ready and as soon as the tire saw the size of the plug it decided to stop leaking all on its own.

While packing away the big gator Oupa Gerrit picked up some extra protection but once he saw that the seal on the packaging was broken he decided that we’ll be okay without it.

I was standing on the side shedding some light on the situation when suddenly I hear an ominous hiss.

The random puncture was not defeated but it had moved to another unsuspecting victim, ME!

With a quick spin-to-win the tubeless sealant wacked the whooshhh and we could set off again.

We rolled down to the bat cave (tunnel under the hi-way) and since Batman was out riding his bike somewhere else we decided to enter.

After emerging unscathed we got on the gas and headed home.

We had to make one more stop for a quick pump and go just before the “Mielie muur” but with our previous experience it was an efficient stop.

When we got back to the cars everyone scattered before the puncture could claim another victim.

Rock-‘n-Roll ride report by Henry

A little bit late, but nonetheless here goes.

Two weeks ago a couple of us set off on our normal rock and roll route. And as usual the pre ride brief was given by oupa Gerrit: Welcome to the newbies and any one who performs an ungracefull dismount will have to write the ride report.

Which was promptly followed with "whats going on haven’t seen any reports for a while now" by yours truly….

And that brings me to this ride report. We set off nice and easy with Alan and myself sweeping at the rear. With very little to report, not too many techs or punctures. We carried on…. and then it all changed.

As we where looking for one of our tracks to follow we had to make a hard right hand turn…..and HEY!!! I’m on the floor no drama just me doing my rendition of 1,2,3 all fall down, damaging only my ego. And thus me volunteering to write this report.

However the big fall was still to come. On our downhill speed zone going past Smuts House there is a serious rocky section. Kristo had a fall that would make anyone cringe. We help him up and waited for him to gather himself.

Took a slow ride back to the mall and the usual after ride beer was well deserved and enjoyed after the ride.
